How Do You Choose to Recognise the Moments That Matter?

coaching competition equitation Jun 11, 2026

We all have ways of recognising what matters to us.

Life with our horses is enriched by countless moments and experiences. Looking around our homes, scrolling through old photographs or opening a drawer of treasured keepsakes, we are often reminded of horses, people and experiences that have shaped our lives. A photograph, score sheet, rosette or certificate can transport us back to a particular moment in time and reconnect us with the feelings, memories and achievements associated with it.

When we take a moment to remember what happened in the arena, we return to the experience with both fresh eyes and rich layers of memory. Time has a way of adding perspective. Looking back invites us to spend time with experiences that still hold meaning for us today.

A score, placing or result can tell part of the story, but it rarely tells the whole story.

Returning to an experience allows us to look beyond the outcome and appreciate everything that contributed to it. Our preparation to ride, our relationship with our horse and the moments that felt meaningful all become part of the picture. When we take time to recognise and appreciate what is happening, we begin to see our horse, our riding and ourselves differently.

Giving ourselves permission to enjoy what we have recognised is just as important as recognising it in the first place. Taking time to appreciate these moments allows us to stay with them a little longer. The energy, excitement and connection we feel with our horses can become part of the experience itself rather than something we rush past on our way to the next goal. By allowing ourselves to enjoy these moments, we create memories that inspire us, motivate us and remind us why we ride.

We remember rides for a reason. They hold meaning and sometimes that meaning is still a feeling for us to make sense of.

Before your next ride, take some time to think about what you want to recreate and how you and your horse can return to that feeling.
