What Are You Learning About Yourself and Your Horse?

Every ride offers us an opportunity to learn.

Life with our horses is enriched by experiences that stay with us long after we leave the arena. A lesson, conversation or test sheet can return to our thoughts and invite us to look again with fresh eyes. With time and experience, patterns begin to emerge and understanding develops in ways we could not always have anticipated.

After riding, it is normal to continue thinking about what happened and wonder why. These questions and others invite us to look again, consider our experiences and become more aware of ourselves and our horses. What felt different? What are you beginning to understand? Which moments felt good and how might you recreate them?

Building a partnership with a horse asks us to be patient, present and aware of how our horse is feeling. There may be ideas, feelings or questions that continue to occupy our thoughts and invite us to look again.

It is natural to want to unpack everything straightaway and make sense of our experiences. Learning and experience can feel unpredictable and understanding rarely arrives all at once.

A conversation, lesson or test sheet can take on new meaning and, with time, experience and a fresh perspective, we notice details that once passed us by and appreciate progress we may not have recognised at the time.

Building a partnership with a horse teaches us to appreciate the value of patience. Minds and bodies need time to learn, communication develops through experience and understanding grows as trust deepens.

When you ride, be curious. Notice what is happening. How is your horse responding? Are they interested? Are they curious and engaged with what you are sharing?

Horses notice, investigate and take an interest in the world around them. Thinking about our rides and taking time to reflect on our experiences invites us to do the same. We remember our ride, remain open to new understanding and continue learning what we need as a partnership.

Before your next ride, take some time to think about what you and your horse are working on, there are guided reflections Inside Achieve Dressage for you to explore.
