Perhaps you already know that feeling particularly well on one rein. The transition comes easily, you can ride the line you intended and you and your horse feel as though you are having the same conversation.

There are lots of reasons why canter can feel easier on one rein than the other.

Your horse’s balance and suppleness are part of the picture. Horses can naturally find one side easier than the other, and your own balance and position can influence what happens too.

Try this when you ride

Canter on both reins and notice what feels different.

Is it easier to make the transition into canter on one rein? Is one canter easier to maintain? Does riding a circle feel different in each direction?
