Alison Kenward riding her horse in a dressage arena with the question โ€˜What do you want to feel as you ride down the centre line?โ€™

The bell will ring and soon you’ll be riding down the centre line.

Before you think about the judge or the movements ahead, think about how your horse is feeling.

Begin with your horse

Is your horse listening to you as well as noticing what is happening around them?

Can you establish a regular rhythm?

Ride some upward and downward transitions. Change the rein. Notice how your horse responds to you.

Let your horse know that you are there on their side.

Appreciate them. Praise them.

When you feel nervous, remember that you and your horse are a partnership.

Then breathe.

Smile. Trust the preparation you have done.

Savour the time in the arena with your horse.

Try this before your next test

As you learn your next test, think about what you need to do to prepare for and set up each movement.

Pick a few cues that resonate with you and remind you what you want to do.

Breathe. Prepare. Corner!

What would help you as you ride your test?
