The Taste of Tradition
Dec 15, 2025
The third week of Advent often brings its own recognisable rhythm. The early sparkle has settled, the lists feel slightly more manageable, and Christmas begins to take on a shape that is uniquely ours. It’s a time when old traditions sit beside new ideas, and we realise that Christmas doesn’t have to look the same each year to feel meaningful.
Tradition, for me, has always been less about doing things perfectly and more about feeling connected. Connected to family, to stories, to the horses who have shaped so much of our lives, and to the small communities we build around us at the yard, at home, and in all the familiar places we return to in December.
Some traditions arrive fully formed, passed down from childhood. Others emerge slowly, almost accidentally, becoming part of the season simply because they make us smile. A cup of hot chocolate after a cold ride. A particular biscuit that only appears in the house during December. A café you always visit with a friend. A walk around the yard talking to the horses before the evening feeds, appreciating the quiet hum of the season.
This week in the Equestrian Advent Calendar, the focus turns to foodie comforts, the small indulgences and shared treats that make this time of year taste a little sweeter. Behind the doors you’ll find chocolate to savour, biscuits that feel like a moment of pause, winter flavours that warm the hands, and little finds that celebrate time spent together. These are the gifts that remind us that sharing something simple can often mean the most.
Traditions can be personal and flexible; they can change as we change. Sometimes the tradition is simply choosing to create a moment that feels right for this year. Meeting a friend for a festive coffee. Trying a new recipe. Treating yourself to something delicious after a cold afternoon at the yard. These gestures become part of the evolving tapestry of our season.
As riders, our December days often weave between the practical and the heartfelt. We tend to our horses, we navigate the weather, and we still find time — somehow — to enjoy small pleasures that anchor us. A warm drink in the tack room. A shared treat between rides. The eash satisfaction of knowing that even in the busy weeks, there is always space for something gentle, comforting, and shared.
Inside this week’s Advent doors, you’ll find gifts chosen with that spirit in mind: treats to enjoy slowly, ideas for gifting to friends, and seasonal favourites to brighten a winter afternoon. They are simple, thoughtful reminders that the taste of tradition often lies in the moments we savour without rushing.
