The Comfort of Now

mindset wellbeing Dec 08, 2025

The second week of Advent often arrives with a sense of gentle contradiction. There’s a small rush beginning, the lists grow, the lights brighten, and Christmas seems to move a little closer each day yet there’s also a quiet longing to pause, to catch up, to settle into the season at our own pace.

Somewhere between the bustle and the stillness, we discover that everything is exactly as it should be. December offers us the gift of noticing what’s already around us: the familiar objects that bring comfort, the small details that soften a long day, the touches — old and new — that make our homes and yards feel festive.

This week in the Equestrian Advent Calendar, the focus turns to the little touches that make December feel like December. Not the picture-perfect decorations we scroll past online, but the things that genuinely make you smile. For some, it’s a tray of slightly imperfect gingerbread ponies cooling on the side. For others, it’s browsing Pinterest with a cup of tea, saving ideas you might try or simply enjoy looking at.

It might be noticing how the arena lights twinkle against the dark evenings or simply noticing how you feel when you’re in your happy place with your horse settled in for the night, the world slowing down for a moment. These scenes make me smile just as much as watching Christmas decorations appear in the gardens I pass on my commute to the stables.

These little choices and observations shape the season far more than anything perfectly styled. They remind us that comfort lives in the things we choose because they feel like us.

At home, decorations often carry stories we’ve collected over time. At the yard, they tend to appear unexpectedly, a few twinkling lights, a ribbon tied to a stable door, a bowl of sweets in the tack room that everyone reaches for. These small gestures of generosity and thoughtfulness bring comfort without asking anything from us. They simply exist, adding warmth to December and anchoring us to the present.

The Advent Calendar mirrors that feeling this week. Behind each door you’ll find small details chosen to brighten a corner of your day, seasonal finds that make you smile, ideas for adding your own festive touches, and curated favourites to enjoy at home or at the yard.

Decorations also encourage a different kind of noticing. They invite us to slow down just long enough to appreciate what’s already around us, the steady companionship of our horses, the laughter shared with yard friends, the cosy feeling of stepping into warmth after cold hands and boot-deep mud. These are the parts of December that often mean the most.
