Tech Setup for Remote Coaching: What You Need, What Works, and What I Recommend

coaching competition confidence equitation Jun 01, 2025

I often get asked, “Do I need fancy tech to get started with remote coaching?”
The answer is no—but having the right tools in place can make the experience smoother, more enjoyable, and more empowering for both you and your horse.

Whether you're planning to record a schooling session, enter an online dressage test, or send footage for feedback through Dressage School Online, this post will help you figure out the best setup for you.

You’ve got options—and I’m here to help you choose.

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to filming your rides. Some riders want a plug-and-play setup that works with their phone. Others prefer a more advanced tracking system. And some are happiest with the tools they already have—like a friend with a steady hand or a trusty tripod.

Here are the three most common options I recommend to my riders:

🟣 1. Pivo: My Go-To for Coaching and Everyday Filming

Pivo has become the most popular choice for good reason. It’s affordable, portable, and works with your phone. I use it regularly in my own coaching, and I’ve helped many riders get set up with it too.

You can:

  • Film your schooling sessions independently

  • Submit test videos for feedback

  • Use it live for coaching if you’ve got signal or Wi-Fi

💡 New update: Pivo’s new subscription model now allows you to record your lessons through the app. It’s a brilliant feature for riders who want to watch back, reflect, and stay motivated.

🟣 2. Pixem: Great for High-Quality, Higher-Investment Setups

If you’re looking for premium test footage or a more advanced auto-tracking experience, Pixem might be your tool. It tracks your movements using wearable sensors and a mounted camera.

It’s an investment—and takes a little more setup—but the results are impressive. I often recommend Pixem to riders who want to create show-quality videos or have a more “hands-off” filming experience.

🟣 3. WhatsApp & Tripod: Low-Tech, Rider-Friendly

Sometimes simple is best. If you’ve got a phone, a tripod, and a way to prop it at the right angle, you’re good to go. I regularly coach riders who record on their phone and upload via WhatsApp or email for review.

This is a great option if:

  • You’re just getting started

  • You don’t want to invest in tech yet

  • You have a friend, partner, or yard mate to help you film

My Advice? Start with What You’ve Got.

You don’t need to buy everything at once—or anything at all. What matters most is that you feel supported, capable, and encouraged to take that next step in your riding.

If you’re not sure which option is best for you, just ask. I’m happy to help you explore your setup, troubleshoot what’s not working, or make a plan for filming your next test or session.

Remote coaching should feel simple, achievable, and worth your time. And it absolutely can be.
