Rider schooling a grey horse in an indoor arena with the question โ€˜How does your balance influence your horse?โ€™

The way you sit influences the way your horse moves and responds.

Your balance affects your timing, the clarity of your aids and the way your horse is able to use their body.

Think about a moment when something changes as you ride. Perhaps a transition feels different in one direction, your horse drifts from the line you intended to ride, or an exercise feels easier on one rein than the other.

Your horse’s balance is part of the picture. So is yours.

Try this when you ride

As you ride, notice:

– Are you centred in the saddle?
– Are you sitting equally on both seat bones?
– Can you stay balanced as you prepare for a transition or change of direction?

Then make an adjustment to your own balance and notice how your horse responds.

What changed?

Your horse’s response can give you useful information about your position, your aids and what you might adjust next.
